Musculoskeletal and Orthopaedic Conditions

E.g. Back pain, ligament injuries, dislocations, fractures (broken bones) and post operative surgery

After an injury, surgery or overuse trauma there can be a period of immobilisation such as with needing to rest or use a cast, boot, or sling. There can be restricted weight-bearing to protect the injury or surgery.  This can lead to joint stiffness, muscle weakness, pain and reduced function.

The hydrotherapy pool provides an ideal environment to offload body weight and therefore allow earlier rehabilitation. Waterproof cast covers can be worn so therapy can even start whilst still on to maintain strength and overall fitness. Warm water and hydrostatic pressure improves circulation, and subsequently the healing process, as well as reduces pain. Water resistance and the therapist’s handling can activate muscles and progress strengthening in preparation for land based exercise.

Aquatic physiotherapy (hydrotherapy) involves both exercises and therapeutic handling techniques within warm water 34-35°C. The properties of water and physiological effects of immersion on the body provide benefits over what land treatment can offer.
