Multiple Trauma

This is when more than one area of the body has been injured due to a physically traumatic incident e.g. Road Traffic Collision (RTC), fall, or sporting injury.

Injuries can range from involving soft tissues and muscles, to significant fractures (broken bones), ligament damage, amputation and neurological injuries (brain and spinal cord). Multiple trauma can have devastating and life changing effects.

Treatment in a hydrotherapy pool is ideal for multiple trauma when one body area injury can limit the rehabilitation of another. In the water the offloading of body weight protects the healing and recovery of injuries, whilst the aquatic physiotherapist can adapt and focus on all affected areas. Aquatic physiotherapy can start much earlier in the rehabilitation process and therefore speed up recovery.

Aquatic physiotherapy (hydrotherapy) involves both exercises and therapeutic handling techniques within warm water 34-35°C. The properties of water and physiological effects of immersion on the body provide benefits over what land treatment can offer.
