Dementia & Alzheimers

There is research to show improved mental alertness and memory within the water, probably related to the increased brain blood flow during immersion. For those with dementia or alzheimers there can be difficulties in understanding, as well as with movement and balance. Fear and anxiety can lead to reduced and limited mobility on land, resulting in a vicious circle of ever reducing function.

The warm water provides a safe environment to reduce anxiety and fear. It provides a fun and enjoyable way to exercise to maintain strength, movement and function. Buoyancy assists the body to stand and walk, allowing the person to work on their balance and improve confidence. The resistance allows to build and regain strength.

Aquatic physiotherapy (hydrotherapy) involves both exercises and therapeutic handling techniques within warm water 34-35°C. The properties of water and physiological effects of immersion on the body provide benefits over what land treatment can offer.
